How to mark World Mental Health Day at work (even with no budget)

Joe (not real name) was the happiest chap in the office.

He greeted everyone with a smile and a “how ya doing?” And he meant it.

He was a great boss and people wanted to be in his team.

But Joe didn’t feel inside how he looked on the outside.

World Mental Health Day is coming up on 10 October 2025 and it’s an important reminder for organisations to support their employees’ wellbeing. But here’s the thing: not every company has a large budget for wellbeing programmes — and that’s okay.

The good news is, you don’t need expensive initiatives or weeks of planning to make an impact. Even small, thoughtful actions can help your employees feel supported, valued, and more resilient at work.

Joe was instrumental to business development and his knowledge went far beyond his job title. No one is indispensable but if Joe left – there would be a big gaping hole.

Joe eventually did leave.

Not because he got a job elsewhere but because he got signed off with burnout. He is recovering now and doing well but all this was preventable.

Joe could’ve helped himself in numerous ways.

His employer could’ve provided targeted support if only they knew it was an issue.

Joe’s story isn’t uncommon.

Every workplace has someone quietly carrying more than anyone realises.

The question is, will you notice in time or only once they’ve already gone?

I know exactly how he feels and that’s embedded into my trainings. Helping your employees in a proactive preventative way BEFORE it spirals is the most cost-effective and caring way to go.
